| Step 1 Greet the class and check the homework. Step 2. 2a First ask students to look at the sentences in the box. Then ask a Student to read the sentences to class. Now tell students we’ll hear five conversations. In each Conversation the person says that they can or they can’t come to the party. Listen carefully and circle the words can or can’t.

Play the tape twice. Check the answers.
Step 3. A gamePrepare 15 cards to give students. 5 with “Yes”, 5 with” No”, and the other 5 with invitations. Give the cards to students. And then make conversations. A: I have a birthday party this evening. Can you come to my party? B: Sure, I’d love to. C: I’m sorry, I can’t. I have to do my homework.
Step 4. 2bAsk a student to read the five sentences in 2b. Tell students these are the reasons why people can’t go to the party. Now listen to the recording again. This time you should write the number of a conversation (1--3)in front of the reasons. Two of the reasons are not in the conversations. These two have no answers. Play the tape. Check the answers.
Step 5. 2c PairworkAsk students if they can give other reasons besides the lists in 2b.(possible answers: not feeling well, have to babysit, going on a trip, go hiking) Now let students look at the sample conversation in the book. Ask a pair of students to read it to class. Now work with a partner. One of you is student A and one of you is student B. Student A, invites your partner to do something with you, and student B , say you can’t do it and give a reason. Then change the role. Ask some pairs to present their conversation to the class.
Step 6. Grammar Focus Call attention to the Grammar Focus. Divide the class into two parts to read the sentences. One asks, and the other answers. Then change the role.
Step 7. Homework
