On a table at his home in Rosetta, a port city in northern Egypt, self-taught artist l bra him Bilal displayed a variety of his signature mini sculptures made with pencil tips.

With about 80 works featuring landmarks and famous people in Egypt and beyond, the 30-yearold artist said he was inspired four years ago to thoroughly grasp the art form after watching videos of a Chinese artist carving pencil lead into sculptures.

Fond of ancient Egyptian icons(象征物),Bilal dedicated one of his earliest works to the world-famous Rosetta Stone, an ancient Egyptian relic unearthed in his city and kept in the British Museum. \"Being the first Egyptian to master this kind of art, I wanted to present the Egyptian

cultural relics in a modern way,\" Bilal noted.

Bilal uses a microscope for an enlarged view, a set of pen cutters or carving detail knives, and quality pencils mostly made in Germany or China while working. Through his deft(灵巧的)hands, landmarks across the globe, including the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, emerge on the pencil tips. The size of each sculpture is no more than 6 mm unless it's a tower, and each takes an average of 10 hours to finish. Some may take him more than 40 hours like his dearest King Tut's mask. These pieces are so delicate and fragile that has to be wrapped in tissues before sliding into a lab tube for temporary storage.

After graduating from law school, Bilal taught himself to be a painter professional enough to give painting classes to junior artists. He started taking part in exhibitions two years ago. “We use magnifying glasses(放大镜) to allow visitors to see the showcased works on display in detail without having to come too close to them.”Bilal said, noting the feedback from visitors has been awesome. “It was a pencil. But once I turned it into a sculpture, it has to be treated as art as well,\" he said.

24. What is the author's purpose in writing the second paragraph? A. To introduce the origin of the art form.

B. To highlight the short history of the art form.

C. To reveal how to turn pencils into mini sculptures. D. To show what made Bilal an artist of pencil tips.

25.What was Bilal's goal after becoming Egypt's first pencil tip artist? A. To teach young artists about the art form. B. To hold exhibitions of pencil tip sculptures.

C. To promote foreign landmarks through the art form. D. To show the Egyptian icons with a modern technique. 26. What do we know about Bilal from the text?

A. Bilal got the inspiration from an Egyptian professional. B. All of Bilal's sculptures are around 6 mm.

C. The King Tut's mask cost Bilal much longer time than the average. D. Bilal's sculpture display famous structures and people within Egypt. 27. What is the attitude of the people towards the exhibitions? A. Favourable. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.

Recently researchers are discovering that learning is easier, quicker and more long-lasting if it involves the body. To some extent, the discovery should come as no surprise. Consider that many of us probably began to understand basic arithmetic (算术)by counting on our fingers before learning to count in our head.

Conventional thinking had it that as we grew, we became more able to think abstractly, which might suggest teachers should help wean children off body gestures to prepare them for the adult world. But in truth, the physical world never really leaves our thinking. For example, when we process verbs such as lick, kick and pick, medical scanners show that the parts of our brain that control the muscles in our face, legs and hands, respectively, light up with activity.

This theory is called embodied cognition(体验认知), and it suggests that what goes on in our minds stems from(起源于)our actions and interactions with the world around us. It means that encouraging children to think and learn in a purely abstract way might actually make lessons harder for them to understand and remember.

Science is beginning to back up the idea that actions really might speak louder than words in the classroom. Spencer Kelly, a psychologist at Colgate University in New York, has found that people spend three times as much time gesturing when the message they get across is particularly important. Kelly has also found evidence that students like a teacher better when

that teacher uses arm and hand movements to emphasize points. Meanwhile, Susan Wagner Cook, a psychologist at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has found that children pick up new concepts more effectively if they are taught to mirror and repeat the gestures their teacher uses, and that lessons involving words and gestures live longer in a student's memory than lessons using words alone.

28. What is the text mainly about? A. A study on classroom teaching. B. The dark side of thinking abstractly. C. The function of body language. D. A new finding about learning.

29. What does the underlined phrase“wean children off body gestures” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Let children be aware of body gestures. B. Make children stop using body gestures. C. Give children an account of body gestures. D. Encourage children to use body gestures. 30. According to embodied cognition, A. our minds can help shape reality

B. it's not easy to grasp abstract concepts

C. the environment matters for one's cognition

D. interacting with the world improves one's memory 31. What can we learn from Spencer Kelly's study? A. Body movements can raise a teacher's popularity. B. Young students like to mirror their teacher's gestures. C. Using body gestures makes students love learning. D. Body language is more powerful than spoken language.

D

Mirko Kovac, using collective building methods inspired by natural builders like bees and wasps, has developed a way to improve the flexibility of 3D printing. A typical 3D printer is limited by the range of its nozzle(喷头), and can only make objects smaller than itself. Dr Kovac's team has removed these restrictions by giving the printer nozzle wings.

Writing in the latest edition of Nature, Dr Kovac describes a system of flying robots that is composed of two types of drones (无人机)∶ builders and scanners. The builders carry the 3D-printing nozzle. The scanners are robots equipped with cameras that are responsible for monitoring the progress of the builders.

The building process alternates between builders and scanners, layer by layer;Printing and adjusting, until a structure is complete. First, a builder hovers(盘旋)over its area of operation and begins to release a jet of the building material as it moves along its flight path. The choice of material is important—it must be lightweight enough for the drones to carry but powerful enough to hold the subsequent layers that will be built on top.

Once the builder robot has sprayed a layer of material, the scanner robot flies over and inspects the progress. The system then computes the next layer that the builder should make, while also correcting for any errors that might have been discovered in what has already been built. These could be errors made by the builder-drones or imperfections in the expansion of the building material.

While these robots have been shown to be capable of manufacturing by passing some tests with.flying co-lours,Dr Kovac says their bread and butter will probably be, initially, in repair, fixing building parts in dangerous or otherwise inaccessible places. Nevertheless, thinking more long term, Dr Kovac even sees a potential future for his construction robots, building on the surfaces of the Moon or Mars.

32. What is the key problem of a typical 3D printer? A. It is too small.

B. It is not flexible enough. C. It can't be moved.

D. It doesn't draw inspiration from nature.

33. What can we infer about Kovac's printer from paragraph 4? A. The process of spraying material works out exactly as planned.

B. It is the scanner robots that decide what the next player should be like. C. Adaptation is necessary in the building process.

D. Expansion of the building material should be prevented. 34. Where may Kovac's 3D builders be first used? A. In repairing buildings.

B. In painting high-rise buildings. C. In testing the security of buildings. D. In constructing on the Moon or Mars. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Building Robots B.Flying 3D Builders C. Occupying Mars D. Natural Builders

A. Don't skip meals.

Be a Student With Dreams and Responsibilities

With the rapid development of China, we, youngsters, should stick to our dreams and shoulder our responsibilities.

As for me,I always dream to better this world.I try to be good at western and eastern cultures, which allows me to spread Chinese cultures. Additionally, I will do my part to make our country more powerful and beautiful.

I sincerely appeal to every student to spare no effort to realize the Chinese Dream. Only when we young generations strive will our nation thrive. One possible version:

Paragraph 1:“I wish I was your cat,”he said sadly.Ellen was confused by his words.“I just want the love you give him..”David said softly.Ellen then put her arms around the boy.“Oh,sweetie!”Ellen whispered and tears ran down her face as she rocked David in her arms. For the first time, there are motherhood feelings in her heart. When the woman from the orphanage arrived at Ellen's house that evening she found David and Ellen playing cards and eating cheese on the kitchen table. Ellen had thought David's leaving would be a relief but once he was gone, the house felt strange and empty.

Paragraph 2: The next day,Ellen got into her car again and drove to the orphanage to ask about David. She was worried he might catch a cold and wondered if he's alright. When she got there, the staff assured her that David was in perfect health. Since then, Ellen started visiting David nearly every day. Three months later she spoke to the director and asked about the

possibility of adopting David.“It's not an easy process,”the director warned.“But if you love this child, it is worth it!”The director was right. It wasn't easy at all, but a year later,Ellen took David home. They became real mommy and son at last.

W: My brother thinks they're challenging and fun things to do,which make him have a happier and better life. Although I can't understand the feeling,I know he's living the life he wants. M: Then how did he get into them?

W: My father loved them and my brother got into them under his influence.

M:I was also influenced to like them by my teacher. In my opinion, extreme sports are the integration of human and nature and can give full play to human potential. W: What you said is beyond my understanding. Text 10

W:Hello, everyone.I'm Lily.Today we'll talk about the National Art Centre. It was planned in the 1960s, built in the 1970s, and eventually opened to the public in 1983. The centre is a huge complex that meets the demand for a great range of arts. Under a single roof it houses concert rooms, theaters, cinemas, art galleries and a public library, as well as three restaurants and a bookshop. If you are interested in classical music then you can go to the National Art Centre on either Monday or Tuesday evening at 7:30 for a dramatic production of The Magic Flute. It is in the Garden Hall, and tickets start at only eight pounds. For those more interested in cinema, you might like to see the Canadian film which is showing on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. in Cinema 2. It's called Three Lives. The tickets cost just four pounds fifty. The Center's main attraction is at the weekend, because on Saturday and Sunday,11 a.m. to 10 p.m., they are showing a wonderful exhibition that hasn't been seen anywhere else in Europe yet.It is a collection of Chinese art called“Faces of China\".It's in Gallery 1. And the good news is that it is completely free, so don't miss it.
