My Awesome Big Brother's College Experience
My big brother Jack is the coolest guy ever. He's 21 years old and just graduated from a really fancy college called Harvard. I always looked up to Jack and thought he was super smart and funny. When he went off to college four years ago, I was really sad because I missed him a ton. But he would come home for breaks and tell me all about his adventures.
College sounded like a crazy place! Jack lived in these huge old buildings called dorms with hundreds of other students. Can you imagine sharing a tiny room and bathroom with someone else? Jack said his roommate sophomore year was really messy and stunk up their room. Yuck! But he got to pick who he lived with after that.
The classes Jack took sounded incredibly hard. He had to read massive books about things like \"economic theory\" and \"postmodern literary criticism.\" I'm not even sure what those things mean! Jack would show me his textbooks that looked more like ancient scrolls with words crammed onto every page. No pictures or anything. I don't know how he stayed awake reading that stuff.
But college wasn't all just studying all the time. Jack told me about all the awesome activities they had on campus too. There were hundreds of different clubs you could join for anything you can imagine - hockey, chess, debate, juggling, you name it. One time Jack's friend started a club for people who liked to clog dance! He said they would perform these crazy dances with woodenshoes at shows on campus. I really want to see that someday.
Another cool thing about college was all the sports. Jack's school had a famous football team called the Crimson that played in a giant stadium every weekend. Can you picture a stadium full of 40,000 people? That's more than the entire population of our town! Jack said the games were like huge parties where everyone would dress up in school colors and cheer really loud. I went to one of the football games when I visited Jack and it was insane - the energy was incredible with everyone screaming and the mascot running around. I've never seen so many people in one place before.
But Jack's absolute favorite part of college was something called finals clubs. These were like super exclusive social clubs that only let in a few dozen people every year. Kids would try to get into the best ones for their entire four years of college by
doing tons of cool stuff and meeting as many important people as possible. It was like a competition to see who could be the coolest and most impressive.
Jack told me crazy stories about the finals club parties and activities they would do. A bunch of them rented out an entire island in the Caribbean one summer just to hang out! They would have huge fancy parties in mansions with professional chefs catering the food. The clubs were so old that they had incredible houses on campus called lodges that looked like modern castles. And the alumni who graduated from the clubs were all fabulously wealthy and successful, so they would donate millions and millions of dollars every year.
Finally, after doing millions of amazing things, Jack was selected to the ultra-exclusive Phoenix Club in his senior year. Apparently only 15 people get into this club every year out of the entire student body! When Jack graduated, he got to move into the club's incredible marble mansion right on campus. I visited him there and it honestly felt like a palace, complete with huge chandeliers, spiral staircases, a movie theater, and even a tiny putting green for golf!
It was incredible hearing my big brother's stories about the Phoenix club. He said they would have white-tie gala events
where everyone wore tuxedos and dresses. The alumni would fly in on private jets just for these parties. People would perform orchestras and everything. One time a famous billionaire businessman showed up with his pet tiger on a leash! Can you even imagine?
Jack also got incredible job opportunities through the club's connections. He was recruited to work at a hedge fund in New York City making millions of dollars straight out of college. All thanks to his involvement in the Phoenix club. I don't really understand what a hedge fund is, but I know it has to do with tons of money.
Overall, Jack's time in college just sounded like a wonderful dream world to me as a little kid. Getting to live in a castle with a bunch of fun, talented, and wealthy friends while studying hard but also partying and doing amazing activities. Colleges like Harvard are seriously like real-life versions of the magic school Hogwarts from Harry Potter. I can't wait until I'm old enough to experience something like that myself someday. Jack is my hero and I want to be just like him!
