第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A

After too long on the Net, even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend’s Liverpudlian accent suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary’s tone seems more rejecting than I’d imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid-hours becomes minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Week ends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.

For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit(提交) articles and edit them by Email and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England, so much of our relationship is computermediated. If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my money, love and work. In fact, at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.

But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I've merged(融合) with my machines, taking data in, spitting them back

out, just another node(波节) on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms(症状). We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It's like attending an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a halfsipped drink. We have become the Net opponents' worst nightmare. What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes and face, has becomes avoidance(逃避), a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber interaction, coming_back_out_of_the_cave can be quite difficult.

At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I’d never done previously. The voices of the programs relax me, but then I'm jarred by the commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather.“Dateline”,“Frontline”,“Nightline”, CNN, New York 1, every possible angle of every story over and over, and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from foreground to background. 36.Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes________.

A. unreal B. unbearable C. misleading D. not understandable

37.What does the last paragraph mean?

A. Having worked on the computer for too long, she became a bit strange. B. She is so interested in TV programs that she often forgets her work. C. She watches TV a lot in order to keep up with the latest news and the weather.

D. She turns on TV now and then in order to get some comfort from TV program. 38.What is the author’s attitude to the computer? A. At first she likes it but later becomes tired of it. B. She likes it because it is very convenient.

C. She dislikes it because TV is more attractive.

D. She dislikes it because it cuts off her relation with the outside world. 39. The underli ned phrase “coming back out of cave” probably means________.

A. going back to the dreaming world B. coming back home from the outside world C. bringing back direct human

D. getting away from living a strange life B

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift-$ 7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave.

But the Fusses weren't the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive the unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches' generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $ 100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $ 3 million-they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer

camp when their parents couldn't afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,”says their friend Sandy Van Weelden.“They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.” Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches' wish that their legacy-a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents-should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors-that was Ish and Arlene Hatch's story. 40.According to the text, the Fusses________.

A. were employed by a truck company B. were in financial difficulty C. worked in a school cafeteria D. lost their home 41.Why would the Hatches routinely go from store to store? A. They decided to open a store. B. They wanted to save money.

C. They couldn't afford expensive things. D. They wanted to buy gifts for local kids.

42.According to Sandy Van Weelden, the Hatches were________. A. understanding B. optimistic C. childlike D. curious 43.What can we learn from the text? A. The community of Alto was poor.

B. The summer camp was attractive to the parents. C. Sandy Van Weelden got a legacy from the Hatches.

D. The Hatches would like the neighbors to follow their example. C

A couple of years ago, I learned this lesson. That day, I took a taxi to Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. The taxi driver slammed on his brakes and missed the other car’s back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident,

got out of his car and started yelling bad words at us. The taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”That was when my taxi driver told me what I now call“the law of the garbage truck”.

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration,_ full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it, and if you agree, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump their problems on you, don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happy at what you do.

I started thinking: how often do I let garbage trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people? That day I said, “I'm not going to do that anymore.”

What about you? What will happen in your life if you let more garbage trucks pass you by? Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. 44.The taxi driver smiled and waved at the driver of the other car________. A. to show his kindness and friendliness B. to thank him for his politeness

C. to satisfy his reaction D. to please the author

45.What does the underlined word “frustration” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. destruction B. annoyance C. defeat D. rubbish 46.If you are asked to write the ending for the text, which of the following might be the best?

A. Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. B. Love the people who treat you right and forget the ones who don't. C. A successful person can regain his focus on what's important.

D. Don't let garbage trucks take over your day! 47.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Secret of Success B. Don't Let Bad Feelings Affect You C. Take Care of the Danger around You D. The Law of the Garbage Truck D

Barack Obama knows what it means when a family struggles. He knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grandkids.

Barack knows the American Dream because he has lived it... and he wants everyone in this country to have the same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we're from, or what we look like, or who we love.

When people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband, I can honestly say that when it comes to his character and his heart, Barack Obama is still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago. That's the man I see in those quiet moments late at night, reading the letters people have sent him-the letter from the father struggling to pay his bills...from the woman dying of cancer whose insurance company won’t cover her care...from the young person with so much promise but so few opportunities.

I see the concern in his eyes and I hear the determination in his voice as he tells me, “You won't believe what these folks are going through, Michelle... It's not right. We've got to keep working to fix this. We've got so much more to do.”I love that he's never forgotten how he started. I love that we can trust Barack to do what he says he's going to do,

even it's hard-especially when it's hard.

And I love that even in the toughest moments, when we're all sweating it-when we're worried that the bill won't pass, and it seems like all is lost-Barack never lets himself get discouraged by the chatter and the noise. Just like his grandmother, he just keeps getting up and moving forward with patience and wisdom, and courage and grace.

And he reminds me that we are playing a long game here and that change is hard and slow, and it never happens all at once. But finally we get there, and we will always do.

48.Why does the author say Barack Obama knows the American Dream? A. Because he has dreamed the American Dream. B. Because he comes from a struggling family. C. Because he has realized his American Dream. D. Because he is good at grasping opportunities.

49.Which of the following is true about the woman dying of cancer? A. She wants to know the final decision. B. She doesn't have a care in the world. C. Her insurance company won't care for her. D. Her insurance company refuses to pay for her.

50.According to the passage, which of the following best describes Barack Obama?

A. He is very strict about the observance of the rules. B. He is advancing bravely and never withdrawing. C. He hopes that change happens all at once. D. He used to be under the care of his grandmother. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
