Mother: Are you ready for the exams? They are the day after tomorrow, aren't they.
Son: Yes they are. And we've got so much homework! I'm really stressed out. I've a headache because of it.
Mother: Really? Well, two days yet and it's over. Who doesn't work hard these days? Everybody wants to get good grades.
Son: That's true. A lot of my classmates are ill now because of the stress and the pressure.
Mother: Oh really? I'm sorry to hear that. Son: Yes, and I feel like I'm ill, too.
Mother: Look after yourself these days. If you become ill now, maybe you can't have the exams. That would be a pity, because you have worked so hard for it. Isn't it?
Son: Yes, you're right. But I'm really feeling not well.
Mother. Two days yet. Then the exams are over and you can have a good rest at home.
Son: Can I go out with my friends then?
Mother: Well... If you did good in the exams, you can. Son: OK.
TOPIC:How do you handle pressure? A/B/C/D/A 共四人或五人 A:
This is a typical talk show question, I wanna ask you to get a sense of how you handle on-the-job stress, is ―Do you like working under pressure?‖ \"How do you handle pressure?\" B:
\"Yes, I do. I can work under pressure. I don't mind.\" So I think that if I have to work under sustained pressure I will perform well\". Pressure is very important to me. With stress, I do the best possible job. The appropriate way to deal with stress is to make sure I have the correct balance between good stress and bad stress. I need good stress to stay motivated and productive. C:
I always react to situations, rather than to stress. That way, the situation is handled and doesn't become stressful.
I actually work better under pressure and I've found that I enjoy working in a challenging environment.
From a personal perspective, I manage stress by visiting the gym
every evening. It's a great stress reducer. D:
Prioritizing my responsibilities so I have a clear idea of what needs to be done when, has helped me effectively manage pressure on the job. If the people I am managing are contributing to my stress level, I discuss options for better handling difficult situations with them. A:
It seems that giving examples of how you have handled stress could get a clear picture how well you can work in stressful situations.
That's all, thank you for your attention
Sarah: How are you doing, Mary? Why do you look so stressed out?
Mary: I’m going crazy studying for the TOEFL exam, my American culture test, and my English literature class.
Sarah: What is that all for?
Mary: I plan to go to the US to further my education next year. So I have to pass all these exams in order to be accepted by good universities.
Sarah: You are such a diligent student. But hey, health is better than wealth, OK?
Mary: What do you mean?
Sarah: Come on. You look so exhausted. You need some more sleep and definitely more nutritious food.
Mary: That is true. I only sleep about 4 hours a day and I don’t remember last time I ate.
Sarah: And Mary, I’m afraid that I have to tell you: You are breaking out.
Mary: What? … Oh no! All these new pimples!
Sarah: It’s all because of stress. Maybe you need set aside some time to relax happening for yourself.
Mary: Yeah, I guess I should lie down on the bed and get some rest.
Sarah: That’s a good idea! And go back to studying after you get some sleep…. Mary?

How To Reduce Stress — Live For 100 Years
Did you know stress kills you? It releases a chemical which is associated with heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and some cancers.
Here's how to take a chill pill and live longer...
— Just chill, and live longer.
How heavy is a can of coke?
100 grams? 500 grams? The weight doesn't matter — what matters is how long you try to hold the can.
If you hold it for a minute, it's not a problem.
If you hold it for an hour, you'll have an ache in your arm.
If you hold it for a whole day, you'll need an ambulance.
In each case, the can of coke weighs the same, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it becomes.
And that's how stress management works - if you carry your burdens all the time, sooner or later they'll become even heavier, and you won't be able to carry on!
Like the can of coke, you've got to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When you're refreshed, you can carry on with the burden.
So, my friend, whatever you're tensed about right now, just lay it down for a moment and read on...
The positive side of stress
Stress is not bad in and of itself. It may help to make us more alert, energize us, or give us a motivational kick in the pants. For years, actors, entertainers, public speakers, and athletes have known how to turn stress into \"high energy\" performances. Properly harnessed, stress can indeed work to our advantage at times. But chronic, big-time stress can make us big-time losers...losers of health and wellness.
Aside from taxing the body, excess stress can also tax the mind and lead to poor health decisions, such as the abuse of alcohol or drugs or other self-destructive behaviors.
In many aspects of our life, we often divide the world into two parts:
the eastern one and the western one. The former usually refers to Asia and the latter includes mainly Europe, North Africa and America. We divide like this not only because of the geographical location differences, but also due to the cultural differences to a large extent. In the following parts, you’ll see such differences, from the causes to the customs of the two sides nowadays.
Part I What leads to the cultural difference?
The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.
The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are gestated by rivers. In China, the mother river is the Yellow River while the Indian one is the Hindu River. These two cultures were developed for several thousand years and formed their own styles. Then in Dang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture gradually went overseas to Japan, mixed into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from the Chinese one, it belongs to the same system.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain ---- the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European one also crossed waters. When the colonists of England settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't distinguish from the European one a lot.
At the same time, the difference of the language systems adds to the cultural differences. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language (see the picture below) while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system, for example, the one I’m using to write this paper.
Other factors like human race difference counts as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
Part II How differently do people behave in daily life?
The differences are everywhere. They affect people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world. Even in everyday life, the cultural differences show up from the moment the eyes are opened to the minute the dreams are invited.
In the following, I’ll give some typical example of the differences
Section 1: Greeting
Greeting is the first step to form a culture, because people begin to communicate with others. The individuals become a community.
How do we Chinese greet each other? Informally, if we meet an friend in the street, we are used to say: ―Hi, have you had your meal?‖ or ―Where are you going?‖. When it is the case of two gentlemen, they tend to shake hands.
However, in the western countries, the above questions are just questions, not greeting at all. They may think you’re inviting them to dinner if you ask about their meals. Usually, they’ll just give each
other a smile or greet with a ―Hi.‖. They’ll shake hands only in some formal situations. By the way, Westerners can leave a party or meeting halls without a formal conge, nor should they shake hands with every attendee like most of us will do here.
Section 2: Expressing gratitude
Think of the situations below. Your mother is busy in the kitchen. She suddenly asks you to fetch a bowl for her. You do so. What’ll your mother’s response be? Probably she’ll just continue doing the cooking. After a while, the dinner is ready. Your mother hands you your bowl of rice. What’s your response? Probably just begin to eat.
That’s what I want to say. In Chinese families, we rarely say ―Thank you‖ to other family members for receiving help or service. Neither will we say so between good friends. It’s such an unpopular response that if you say it, the counterpart will think you are treating him as a stranger, otherwise you are lacking of intimacy.
But in the West, \"thank you\" is one of the most frequently used sentences. Teachers will thank a student for answering a question; husbands will thank his wife for making a coffee.
However, as an interesting phenomenon, it’s a custom to say \"thank you\" in Japan. No matter in family or among friends, Japanese chronically use it all the day. This is probably the aberrance of the culture.
Section 3 Dining
The ways people eat, that is, the table manner, really distinguish a lot. The reason for this is probably because of the different dining tools and menus.
Easterners use chopsticks, or sometimes even grasp rice straightly with hands as Indians do. The thin and long chopsticks cannot be used to cut food, so we usually use our teeth to act as knives. We hold our food, meat or vegetable, with the chopsticks, send them to the mouths, bite off a part of it and remain the other part on the
chopsticks. That’s the usual way we eat. We are also used to hold up our bowls when having rice or soup. Japanese hold bowls to have miso soup without spoons. But all these habits are considered rude in the Western countries.
The etiquette in the West requests that when eating, bowls and plates cannot leave the tables. Food should be cut by knives to fit into the mouths. Of course your mouth cannot touch the plates or bowls. So the regular process is like this. You cut your steak on the plate with fork and knife, send the meat cube into the mouth with fork and nothing will be returned back but the fork alone.
Section 4 Symbolizing
Symbolization is how people imagine or regard something. It actually reflects the way people think. Here I’ll only discuss some symbolization that frequently appears in daily life.
First is about the colors. We often give each color some meanings, because we feel differently when facing different colors. So people always have preference when choosing colors of clothes,
decorations, etc. In the APEC summit held in Shanghai several years ago, in the last day, the presidents from all over the world wore the traditional Chinese Dang suits and took a photo together. The colors of the suits were chosen by themselves freely. However, it’s quite interesting to find that most Easterners chose red while most of the westerners preferred blue. To explain this, it’s easy to realize that what red means is almost opposite in the East and the West. Red means luck, fortune here. We Chinese often use this color to decorate in festivals, such as red lanterns, red Chinese nodes, red bangers. But red stands for blood, revolutions in the West. So the presidents avoided wearing this unlucky color.
Another interesting discovery is about the dragons. In the East, dragons are imagined as something like snake and are flowing in the sky for most of the time. The dragon is said to have the face of the horse, the horns of the deer, the ears of the ox, the body of the snake, the claws of the eagle and squama of the fish. We regard dragon as God and say that we Chinese are the offspring of the dragon. The God of Dragons of the four seas can charge the rainfalls, so we sometimes also call them the God of the water or rain. But in the West, people think dragons as dinosaurs, which can stand on the ground with feet and fly with huge wings. They lay
eggs just like dinosaurs. The dragons of the West have the ability to erupt fire, instead of water. The fire can destroy everything so the dragons are not welcomed at all. They even become the symbol of the Devil.
Part III What can we do to treat the culture gap?
Now we have seen that there exists such a huge gap between eastern culture and western one. Then what should we do to face this gap in the gradually globalizing world?
Firstly, we cannot deny any of the cultures. Every nation has its own characteristics and it’s mainly through its culture that we first begin to know the nation and its characteristics. So we cannot say that this culture or custom is right and that is wrong. Equal respect should be attached to every culture in the world, even to those that are not in existence any more.
Next, we should get to learn how to coordinate the different cultures. We say the world is becoming smaller and smaller. More foreigners come and go everyday. When it is in the same country, the same city, the same neighborhood, the cultural collision is expected to be
more serious. So we should try to avoid this happening. One important thing is to get some basic knowledge about the other cultures so as not to misunderstand some actions or habits of the foreigners.
When the above two is done, we can start to communicate. I mean we can take in some strong points from the foreign cultures. Though there doesn’t exist correctness in terms of culture, it does have the terms of more advanced or more suitable for the world nowadays. Of course, we cannot throw away our own culture and accept another one totally. Every culture is a treasure to the history of the Earth, so we should only pick out those we lack to perfect our own.
Different cultures add the most colorful element to the world of 21st century. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther.
Culture influence)这篇可以参考下内容:)~~
As we all know, different countries have different cultures. Culture is the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one category of people from another.
It is inevitable that the cultural difference has impact on business. For example, when a company having meeting, the word \"table\" in American English that means to put something on the agenda. But in British English it means to put something off the agenda. This example indicated how the culture affects the business.
There are four cultural dimensions that were defined in Hofstede's research: Power distance, Uncertainty avoidance, Individualism, Masculinity,
and
recently
Hofstede

one
more:
long-term-short-term orientation.
What I think the most significant influence in cultural difference is the power distance. It would condition the extent to which employees accept that their boss has more power than they have and the extent to which they accept that their boss's opinions and decisions are right because he or she is the boss.\" I considered it as how much subordinates can consent or dissent with bosses or managers. It is the distance between a manager and subordinate. Among most oriental corporate cultures, there is hierarchism, greater centralization, sometimes called 'power-oriented culture', due to the historical reasons. That is a high power distance culture
that mangers make the decision and superiors appeal to be entitled more privileges. Their decision always close supervision positively evaluated by subordinates. In this situation, it is not be regarded if a subordinates have a disagreement with their managers, especially in Malaysia, Japan, China, India.
After studyig abroad for one year or two, a number of overseas college graduates return to China, their motherland in a hope to settle down if they find satisfactory jobs. However, before long, they find themselves in a predicament resulted from reverse or re-entry culture shock; namely, the cultural diffferences between two different countries stand out and come to clash before their eyes and in their mind.
These same changes are already happening in most new countries around the world . Today , a man who can read or fix a machine may become the new leader of his community in place of an older person. Often young people can better understand the new sciences and modern skills ; as these young people learn and advance , their wages rise and they become increasingly successful.
To many of the returnees, culture shock found in corpaorate context is more frustrating than that in a societal context. In foreign companies abroad, it is very common that juniors may argue or discuss about their work with their seniors if they hold a different view, just for the good of the work. The boss would either take the argument or leave it, without feeling he is being humiliated or having his authority challenged. However, in a Chinese work place, which is characterized by a rigid hierarchy, staff at the bottom of the ladder are in no position to challege their seniors whatsoever.
Another often –cited shock concerns working overtime and how it is perceived in a Chinese work place. In China or other Asian societies, bosses tend to think their emplyees are their assets and hence working overtime is a matter of course. As it is, those who work overtime when it is time to go home usually do things unrelated to their work during office hours. Some of them deliberately work overtime to show to their boss that they are hard-working. But in a culture that extols individuality, 100% Americans choose family over work.
Vantage-point(merit):Most of the Chinese students think that forigen universities are able to provide them with better education and research support. It goes without saying that developed countries are more advanced in the fields of science and technology. By studying abroad Chinese students can keep abreast of the time.
Dis(potential pitfalls): The high living expense in foriegn countries must overwhelm parents, and the cost will bring much pressure for parents. Besides, a few students go abroad only because many of their classmates want to go abroad They may not really understand what they want to do themselves. So it is not right time for them to go oversea
Study abroad
Choosing which university to attend is a big decision for a young person to make. Some students prefer to stay near their homes, and live with their parents while at school. Others choose to move far away to a different country for their education. I believe that
latter students choose to move away to experience a new culture, to learn a new language, or to go to a specific university that specializes in their field of study.
Moving to a new country is an eye-opening experience. The way society works in other cultures is very different from one's own. For example, I had a friend who went to school in Canada. She constantly told me stories about the differences in the food, the architecture, and the way people treat each other. One cannot fully understand his/her own culture until he/her has compared it with another that is vastly different. For this reason, moving to a new country to go to school can be of great importance for students who wish to study international relations.
When one moves to a new country, it is much easier to learn the language of that country. For example, my friend who moved to Canada studied English for years before her departure. While she could express herself, she never fully mastered the language. However, upon her return, I was shocked and amazed at her new level of English. She was completely fluent, and thus gained a great new skill because she studied abroad.
The last reason why students choose to study abroad is because in some cases, doing so is the only way to enter the program one is interested in. For example, if one wants to study marine biology, it would be best if he/she went to a university that was located near the ocean. Also, some schools are known to be the best in a particular field. For instance, in America, Harvard is known to be the best school for law.
So, I believe that students study away because they are interested in learning about new cultures, learning new languages, or studying specific programs. While there are many excellent reasons to study in one's home country, studying abroad can offer many new and exciting experiences.

A conversation about taking the language course abroad
xiao Li xiao wang met each other on their way home
Li; hi! xiao wang, how is everything? Wang: pretty good, busy though. And you?
Li: I'm fine, too. My boss has asked me if I would like to get a six month of language training abroad.
Wang: that is good news. Congratulations. Where are you going? Li: thanks. Boston, in the United States. But I haven’t made up my mind yet.
wang: why not? this is like a chance of a life time.
Li: I know. I have a mixed feeling about it. On one hand I could actually go and see what life looks like over there. I will have a better understanding of American culture which is so important to an English learner. I believe my oral as well as my listening skills will improve a lot,
wang: that is true. You will pick up a lot of idiomatic English. Listening to native speakers talk must be fun. Right?
li:I think so. But six months seems a long time. You know my son is still in third grade. My wife is a doctor. She often takes night shifts. If I go aboard, nobody will take care of the boy when his mom is at work. We can't leave him home alone.
Wang, en, I know what you mean. that is a big problem.
Why can't you ask your mom to come over to watch the boy while you are away.
Li: I thought about it . I am just worried that my mom might not get along with my wife. I really don't know what to do.
wang: don't worry. you will work it out. Let me know when u make up your mind. ok? li, i wll. bye. wang: bye
A: hey i am planning to go overseas to study, do think it is a good idea?
B: Oh really? Why do you want to do that? C: Is it because your favorite university is abroad?
A: Well, that was one of the reasons. Besides that, I also want to immerse myself in a totally different culture to expand my experience and the knowledge about the rest of the world. B: wow, that sounds pretty cool, maybe I should go overseas as well.
C: You too? for what reason? I heard that you do not have delicious food in other countries.
B: well, not neccesarily true. Some of my foreign friends told me that some countries do have authentic asian food that i am familiar
with.
A: you mean asian countries like Japan or Singapore? Well you will definitely have a different life there! Hope you like it.
B:Ya thanks. Well C, what is your plan? Are you going to study abroad as well?
C: well, I am still considering the issue. Basically I am interested in studying economics and the university of dream is located in London.
A: Oh I know, isn't it London School of Economics!
C: yes you are right.but i am also aware that the tuition fees and other expenditure level can be quite here there. So in the end, I may not be able to afford it.
B: Oh don't give up man! You can just try and apply for a scholarship or a loan.
C:Thanks for your advice and I hope my dream can come true.
M:Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our program. Let me introduce this week's panel.Mrs.Perkins,a housewife and mother of three.Miss Lessing,a law student.Police Constable Hardwick, and last but not least John Henderson,a
16-year-old schoolboy. The question for the panel this evening is,er...smoking should be bannes in all places, including the street.Does the panel agree?Mrs.Perkins, can we have your opinion first?
W:Yes,er...I quite agree that smoking should be blannes in all public places.I don't smoke myself and cigarette smoking bothers me.I think it bothers most nonsmokers.
M:Constables Hardwick,what do you think?
M:I agree entirely that smoking should be banned in all public places that are enclosed,er...like office, shops, clubs, etc, but I don't think it should be banned in the street.I mean,in the street it doesn't harm anyone but the smoker himself. And er...that's the smoker's business. M:Miss Lessing?
W:I don't agree at all. I don't think it helps to ban things. If you ban smoking in all public places, more pople will want to do it.Pople always want to do things that they are not allowed to. M:And now,can we have your opinion,John?
M:I think tobacco smoking should be blanned altogether in public places and private places. In the first place,it's a dirty habit. In the second place,it's a dangerous to your health. M:Thank you very much,John.
No Smoking in All Public Places
Some businesses now say that no one can smoke cigarettes in any of their offices. Some governments have banned smoking in all public places. This is a good idea though it takes away some of our freedom.
As we know, smoking is harmful not only to our health but also to the environment. Smoking can lead to many diseases, such as lung cancer. Smoking affects non-smokers more than it does smokers. Ratio of passive smokers getting ill is higher than that of smokers. So, many nonsmokers are against smoking.
In public places, the harm of smoking is greater. This is connected with another effect of smoking. That is, smoking pollutes environment by giving much poisonous vapour off into the air. Therefore, that the government ban smoking is very necessary and important to us. It is a measure to protect our health and environment. So many people, especially nonsmokers are Ior tile policy.
Some people say that it takes away some of our freedom. I think it is a one-sided view. If one wants to smoke, he may smoke in private, not in the public places. In fact, smokers still have the
freedom of smoking.
But, I think, smokers had better give up smoking, not only in private places, but also in the public places, everywhere. It will be beneficial to all of us.
As we know that smoking is harmfull to the health. But today many people ofen smoke. The phenomenon has became a serious public hazard. We should appeal our government to make relevant laws to control it. In my opinion, people must be prohibiten from smoking in the public. If one violated the relative rules, they shoud be fined heavily.
There are three reasons, at least, for it. First and foremost, smoking can damage the environment our live now. The condition is very bad now. Smoking contributs to the decline of our environment. What is more, the somking can hurt other people's health. For instance, sitting beside the somker ,a nosomker draw more smoke. Even though the nosmoker don't smoke. after having drawed beside a few hours, the nosmoker's health must be hurt. In this way, Everyone can be hurt. If only somking cannot be banned in public.
Finally, smoking also can damage smoker's lung. If our government make the relevant laws, the number of the smokers can reduce immediately. At some point, the health of somker can be reserved. To conclusion, smoking should banned in public as quckly as possible.

A: Good morning, BB
B: hey, good morning, AA.(a pause)What are you going to do today? It looks like you are going to somewhere. A: I am to attend a volunteer activity, what about you? B: Actually, I have no idea what to do. I just feel so bored now! A: Oh, why not go with me?
B: Oh? Volunteer activity, what is it mainly about? Just tell me anyway.
A: We mainly do some advertisements on Environmental protection, and then pick up the rubbish along the HanJiang River, are you interested in it?
B: I am just so free anyway, so I am just going with you, and do a meaningful thing incidentally. A: That is great, then let’s go.
场景二:
C: Hey, AA, you are here finally.
A: Oh, I am so sorry, I am late. I came across a friend on the way, and she wanted to join us too. Here she is. C: O? Great!!!
B: nice to meet you, I am CC. C: Nice to meet you, my name is BB.
A: Er, BB is a new here, can you show him around and tell him something about Environmental protection
C: OK. BB, come with me, I will give you a vivid description. B: En, I am happy to hear that.
C: The environmental problems are very serious at present. There are soil and water loss, the sand storm and water pollution, air pollution and many other kind of pollution. As for the detail, here is a document, you can read it yourself.
B: Oh, let me take a look . (a moment later)yeah, here are some good examples of other countries’ protecting the environment. C: Yes, there are so many examples we can learn from.
B: Right, but among them, I think Japan does the best. They must good use of all the resource, maybe it is because of the shortage of
these resources in their island country.
C: I agree, and I think Switzerland also do a good job. They strongly suggest their citizen riding bicycles to decrease the air pollution. A: I can’t agree more, these nations really think much of the environment. But I believe we can do better than them.
C: Yeah, If only every teenage could stand out to support the environmental protection work.
场景三:Introduction to the passers-by
D: hello, your activities are really significant; I want to express my support
A: Thank you very much. It is your support that make our work meaningful.???
B: yeah, we live in Chaozhou, we need to do something to contribute to it, it is the least we can do. And we also hope these will be more people join us so that we can do better.
D: In fact, I am quite willing to be one of you, but I just so busy and I don’t know what to do, are there any suggestions?
C: In fact, protecting the environment needn’t have to take part in any activities; all that you need to do is not to spot it yourself. D: Oh, It is reasonable; we can do from the least. No matter how
small the thing is. it is worthwhile.(a moment later) Er, are there anything I can help, as a native of Chaozhou, I want to contribute to it urgently.
AC: We are glad to hear that, if it is possible, you can help us do some ads.
D: haha, It is easy, I will let everyone know what we can do to protect the environment.
Online education
A: Hi, what are you doing ?
B、C: We are studying on the internet.
A: With the rapid development of the internet, online education is becoming more and more popular.
B: Yes, and do you know why online education has been more and more popular?
A: I think it is mainly because online education is very easy and convenient. And if there is the internet, it will be possible to accomplish online education.
C: Yes ,you are right. But the most important thing is that it costs much less than traditional teaching(education) for either schools or students.
B: Yeah, through the internet, we can also practice English very well and make English friends in the free international chatting rooms. People around the world are ready to speak English with us. D: Hi, what are you talking about ? Can I join you?
