13、Victor had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. He finally left at about 11 p.m. He drove home slowly because the weather was terrible--the wind was blowing and it was raining heavily. He was turning into a road when a man suddenly ran in front of his car. Victor almost hit the man, but he stopped just in time. Victor was afraid and the man looked afraid too. Victor got out of the car but the man ran away before Victor could ask if he was all right. It was very strange.

When Victor got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet. He called his wife but there was no answer. Then Victor remembered that she was out at a concert.

Victor was still very upset about what happened on the road, so he made himself a drink. Then he went upstairs to have a bath. He saw that the window in bedroom was open. This was strange because his wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars. When he went to close it, he found Ellen. She was lying on the floor. 14、“Why do birds sing?” I asked a group of children. “To attract metes(配偶)!” answered a boy. A 4-year-old girl added shyly, “birds sing because they are happy, and they want to make us happy, too.” I think both answers are probably true in a way. If birds sing happily, it shows all is good in the forest: no predators (捕食者) are present, and the birds can feed, sing and do other bird things. The sound of a relaxed robin(知更鸟) singing is easy to understand because it makes us feel this way too—it’s a sound that lifts our own hearts when we hear it.

What happens when a predator comes into their areas? The nearby birds quickly give an alarm(警报) call, a short sound that warns, “Danger is coming!” On hearing the sound, the other birds stop singing and fly away, the deer lift their heads and stop moving and the rabbits run into the bushes. Suddenly, the forest becomes silent.

When humans walk through the woods in a hurry or while talking with a friend, we don’t see much wildlife. We may think that there aren’t many animals living there, but more likely, they know we are coming and hide minutes before our arrival. But if we learn to avoid setting off alarms, we can see many more wild animals without frightening them. To practice, find a place in a park and sit quietly for an hour. Take notes as the birds begin to relax and sing again. When I do this, I am always surprised at the wonderful thing animals will do when humans stay still (不动的) long enough. 1.In the writer’s opinion, the children’s answers to his question are . A.funny B.interesting C.honest D.reasonable 2.Why can’t we see much wildlife in the woods from this passage?

A.Because we have set off alarms. B.Because we fail to give warnings. C.Because we come at the wrong time. D.Because few animals live there. 3.The purpose of the last paragraph is to .

A.show people how and when birds sing. B.ask people to learn something about birds. C.tell people how to protect birds in the wild. D.advise people to enjoy the songs of birds. 4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The life of birds. B.How birds sing in the forest. C.Birds in the forest. D.The messages in birds’ singing.

15、About 30 years ago, China was known as the \"Bicycle Kingdom\". But the two-wheeled mode(方式) of transport's popularity began to disappear Many bikes were soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors. But recent months, we have seen a revival of bikes across China. An increasing number of people choose cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. Now, Chinese service operators are also trying to solve these problems. For example, Mobike sets a100-point credit(信用) score for each user. The points will be taken if there is bad behavior. 16、Cats’ sense of smell is very important to their health. Many cat owners have seen a cat smell the food and refuses it. Careful sniffing( 嗅) tells the cat if something is safe to eat.

Cats have a pair of vomeronasal organs(犁鼻器) on the roof of the mouth. When the cat wants to sniff, she will breathe the air in through her mouth. At this moment, she will often squint(斜视) her eyes and maybe even flatten(使…平坦) her ears. This makes her look like she is making faces. The vomeronasal organs will then analyze(分析)the smell---almost as if the cat is tasting the smell.

When you come home from outside the house, your cat can smell what you had for lunch and for a mid-afternoon snack. She can smell the people you shook hands with and your neighbour you stopped to talk to and hug. She can smell the grass brought under your shoes as you took a shortcut across the lawn. Your cat’s sense of smell is so good that she can smell difference between a gallon of water with a teaspoon of salt in it and plain water. In comparison, we think of salt as completely tasteless.

Cats have scent glands(臭腺) on each side of the forehead, on the chin, the lips and next to the tail. When your cat rubs up against your hand, your leg, the sofa, and your bed, she is leaving her scent in those things. She will then

use her sense of smell to recognize “her” things, people and even other pets in the home.

If you want to have fun with your cat’s sense of smell, take some small bits of different things, such as a bit of chicken, some flowers and some fish. Place each different scent under a piece of paper towel(so your cat cannot see any of them) and encourage your cat to investigate and find what kind of food she likes to eat best.

1.Cats know whether the food is fit to eat or not with their____________. A.sense of touch B.scent glands C.organs of smell D.sense of taste

2.The third paragraph was written mainly to prove that _____________. A.cats are very smart

B.cats have a good sense as dogs C.salty water has a special smell D.cats’ sense of smell is excellent

3.What does your cat do when it rubs against your foot? A.She puts her scent on it. B.She shows respect to you. C.She asks you to play with her. D.She smells where you were just now.

4.What does the word “investigate” mean in the last paragraph? A.Smell. B.See. C.Look. D.Send. 5.The passage mainly tells us _________________. A.cats are one of our best friends B.cats have sharp sense of smell C.sense of smell is very important D.cats know if something is safe to eat

17、It happens every night — bedtime. But what if you’re not sleepy? Should you still go to bed if you are just going to lie there with your eyes wide open?

There are many reasons why you are not able to fall asleep. You might be excited by something you did that day. You might be excited about what you’re going to do next day. Maybe you can’t fall asleep because you don’ t like sleeping all alone in your room. All of these reasons are normal . However, there are some steps you can take to help you fall asleep. One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you’re thinking about at bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a test, or unhappy about being laughed at school, it can really help to tell somebody. Knowing that somebody has heard you can help ease (宽慰) your mind so that you can rest.

It also helps to sleep in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room. If there’s anything in your room that makes you feel afraid at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, be sure to ask one of your parents if it can be moved. If you are usually sleepless around bedtime, doing certain things to relax beforehand (预先) may help you fall asleep when you go to bed. For example, take a warm bath, or listen to a story at least 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep. It also helps to go to sleep at the same time every night. As a result, your body will get the message that it’s almost time to sleep.
