13、We walked all afternoon with Infadoos and Scragga. Their men walked about a hundred metres ahead of us. “When did your people, the Kukuana, come to this place?”

“They came from the north many thousands of moons ago,” Infadoos explained. “When they reached the mountains, they could go no farther. They stayed here where the land is good and there is water.” “Do you live here in peace?” I asked.

“There have been two wars. Once an army came down from the north, but we killed most of them. Soon after that, we fought among ourselves.” He said, “The king at that time had two sons—twins. When he died, both young men wanted to be king. One of the twins, Twala, killed the other and became king.”

“Did the dead man have a wife and children?” I asked. I knew that if he did, the fighting could start again one day. “Yes. He had a wife, Imotu, and a son, Ignosi. They ran away.” He pointed to a village a short way ahead. “That is the village where Imotu and Ignosi first hid,” he said. “We shall stay there tonight..”

As soon as we were within a mile or so of the village, an army of men came out. As we passed them, they shouted a welcome.

Their women were in the village. They stopped whatever they were doing to watch us pass by, but they were not rude. As soon as we were comfortable in a hut, they came with milk, honey, and cooked food.

A young man brought a fat young ox which he killed and cut into pieces. We took a few pieces for ourselves and gave

A letter of reply is sometimes a most treasured thing. Here is a story that tells about this common and natural human 14、feeling.

The busiest woman in Labrador during one bitter cold Christmas not very long ago, was an Australian nurse named Kate Austen. But Nurse Austen was not too busy to write with a long, friendly letter for every gift of food or clothing received for poor villagers in the north of Australian. Among the gifts was a box of knittings (毛线编织品) for children, knitted and sent by a woman in Toronto.

Nurse Austen, was busy, and not feeling too well that winter. She could have written just ordinary routine notes of acknowledgement. But that was not her way. She sat down and wrote the woman in Toronto a real letter telling all about the village, and the names of the children who were wearing the knitted gloves and caps, and what they said when they got them, and how they looked when they wore them. She wanted the woman who had knitted and sent all those lovely knittings “to see how much happiness and warmth she had created.” Not long after, she received the following answer from Canada. Dear Miss Austen,

Your letter made me happy. I did not expect such a full return, I am eighty years old, and I am blind. There is little I can do expect knit, and that is why I knit so many caps and sweaters scarves. For sixty years I have been making up missionary packages of such clothing or food or medicine or book as I could collect. But never before in all that time have I had a personal letter picturing the village and telling me who is wearing the clothing and what they said. I did not suppose that ever in my lifetime I should receive a letter like that. My God bless you.

15、Koala Joey

Far away in Australia, a koala sits high in a eucalyptus tree. She grips a branch with the rough pads and sharp claws on her paws. In her pouch (小袋) she hides something special—her baby.

At birth the baby koala, called a joey, does not look like his furry mom. He is pink and bald(无毛的)and as small as a jellybean. Although he cannot see, he moves his legs and crawls. He smells milk and, without any help, starts to feel his way to his mother’s pouch. Five minutes later he slips (滑) inside.

Inside the pouch, the joey drinks his mother’s milk and grows. His eyes open. His ears form, and he hears his mother’s calls. Soon thick fur covers his body. By the time the joey is ready to explore the world, he looks like his mother.

At five months old, the joey peers out of his pouch. He eats a special soft food from his mother called pap. When the joey eats pap, he gets bacteriafrom his mother’s stomach in his tummy too. He will need the bacteria to eat eucalyptus (细菌)leaves, like grownup koalas do.

In another month, the joey leaves the pouch for the first time. He clings(贴着)to his mother’s belly while she climbs in the treetops. By the time he is eight months old, the joey no longer fits in his mother’s pouch. But he still drinks her milk.

Now, for a few hours each night, the joey climbs on his mother’s back for a ride. While riding piggyback, he reaches for eucalyptus leaves. Just like mom, he nips (咬) off leaves and chews them. The leaves have plenty of water in them, so koalas rarely go to the ground for a drink. When the joey is about one year old, his piggyback days are over. Now he climbs to the treetops by himself. On each of his front paws, he has two thumbs opposite his three fingers. He can grip branches and grab leaves.

The young koala spends more and more time away from his mother. He no longer drinks her milk. He dozes (打瞌睡,打盹) alone on tree branches. Soon he will move to another tree and live on his own. 1.When a joey is eight months old, it can _________. 4.The author most likely wrote this passage to________. A.introduce readers about baby koalas B.tell a funny story about a baby koala C.encourage people to protect baby koalas D.compare a baby koala to other baby animals
