一、阅读理解

Cities are taking steps to support wildlife populations and educate citizens about the importance of the environment. Here are four of the most wildlife-friendly cities in the United States.

Austin, Texas

Austin, the capital of Texas, earns the rank as the top city for wildlife in large part due to its work to help improve declining monarch butterfly populations. Austin sits within the main migration pattern of the monarch, which means that monarch butterflies pass through it twice annually. Austin also leads all US cities with 2,616 certified (经认证的)wildlife habitats.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta secures the second-place ranking thanks to its Climate Action Plan, which aims to expand on the 3,000 acres of parks that the city already manages. Already classified by the US Forest Service as one of the most forested urban centers in the country, Atlanta also calls fbr planting more trees and creating more green spaces based on its climate plan. Six neighborhoods in Atlanta have been designated (指定)as Community Wildlife Habitats. Put together, these areas of vegetation can help reduce the urban heat island effect in the city.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle is home to 4 parks that span 6,441 acres, including 2,500 acres of forested public land. The city’s largest park, Discovery Park, covers 534 acres and serves as an important protected area fbr birds and marine animals. Due to the amount of forested land in Seattle, the researchers use the city to study how urban environments can be designed to support wildlife. The Seattle Urban Project enlists the community to report wildlife sightings, which helps to demonstrate how and where flesh-eating mammals can coexist with humans.

Chula Vista, California

Chula Vista, a city in southern California, ranks high on the list due to its efforts to combat water use issues. The city’s NatureScape Program encourages citizens to replace lawns with gardens of native plants that attract pollinators (传粉昆虫)and conserve water. The city has also formed the CLEAN group, a partnership between the government, businesses and community groups designed to address environmental issues.

I woke to the sound of birds outside my window and lay in bed, going over the busy day ahead of me. Finally, I got up and attempted to switch on the light — nothing happened. I checked my phone. No Wi-Fi, no data. With our unstable cell service, there was no way of knowing if we had received alerts fbr a power failure. I grabbed a sweater, went downstairs, found a flashlight and a match to light the gas stove, and then boiled water to brew coffee. Outside the window, the falling snow obscured (遮蔽) the sunrise. Deep piles of snow covered the road.

My work meetings and deadlines, my sons’ classes and tests, my husband’s plans — everything would have to wait. Why does this happen today of all days?“ I asked. Thankfully, the wood stove was still going strong. I took a deep breath. I supposed we had everything we needed.

The house was quiet as I sipped my coffee and cuddled (搂抱) our dog. One by one, my husband and sons came downstairs and complained about the turn the day had taken.

I opened the curtains to let light in. We gathered around the table and had cereal. After breakfast, my husband played a game of solitaire. Then my sons joined him in building a house of cards that reached three levels until our cat jumped up to investigate and knocked it

down. We played a round of Scrabble and had my favorite snow day lunch: grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Then we took a long walk in the woods behind our house, walking along the stream. We spotted deer tracks and played in the snow that was coming down in big fluffy flakes. When we returned, all the clocks in the house were blinking. I started to make dinner, happy to have things back to normal — even better than normal.

It was a day that began without electricity, cut off from the rest of the world, and ended with hot chocolate and power restored. We were recharged by the unexpected gift of a day together.

Wildlife crossings, which are human-made structures like underpasses, overpasses, or culverts (涵洞) that help animals move safely around their habitat, don’t just protect animals

and biodiversity. They can also reduce the number of car collisions and save significant money, a new study finds.

“I thought it would be useful to provide some information on the financial benefits of wildlife crossing structures for policymakers, transportation planners, and conservationists”, says Wisnu Sugiarto, the author of the study.

For this study, Sugiarto studied collision information from the Washington State Department of Transportation. He examined data for 13 of the 22 wildlife crossings in Washington State from 2011 to 2020. Then he made adjustments based on how close the crossings were to other structures and the time it took to build them. He compared the numbers of wildlife-vehicle collisions each year before and after the construction of a wildlife crossing. Then he compared his analysis to that of a separate area in the state with no crossings at all.

“The findings reported that wildlife crossing structures reduced the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions (碰撞)by one to three accidents on average per mile per year, but not all structures had statistically significant effects”,Sugiarto says.

Using financial estimates from other research, he determined that a wildlife crossing offers an annual benefit of between $235,000 and $443,000 every year. ”Earlier studies focused on wildlife crossings in North Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming. They found wildlife underpasses and fencing could improve road safety, he says. “My findings complement the earlier studies and are also in favor of improving road safety.”

Besides, the findings are timely. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2021 includes $350 million over five years for the construction of wildlife crossings.

‘‘Before working on this research, I wasn’t aware of any strategies to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. I also thought we couldn’t do much about it, partly because we can’t communicate with wildlifb or control their movement”, Sugiarto says. “However, it turns out that there are multiple strategies to handle issues related to wildlife-vehicle collisions and that we can do something about them.”

8.What did Sugiarto think about conducting the study in paragraph 2? A.It is necessary. B.It is cost effective. C.It is difficult to conduct. D.It would educate the pedestrians.

试卷第4页,共11页

9.How did Sugiarto conduct his study? A.By turning to previous findings. B.By refening to professional data. C.By analyzing the cause of collisions. D.By interviewing different passers-by.

10.Why are Sugiarto's findings considered to be timely? A.They offer a way to ensure road safety. B.They draw public attention to collisions.

C.They help improve the safety of wildlifb crossings.

D.They provide evidence for new policies on wildlife crossings. 11.What is the effect of the study on Sugiarto? A.It makes him famous.

B.It gives him new topics to explore.

C.It changes his view on wildlife-vehicle collisions.

D.It provides inspiration for him to communicate with wildlife.

Towns across Italy have been racing to launch clever plans aimed at attracting new residents to revive (复兴)their fortunes in recent years. From abandoned homes selling for little more than a euro, to ready- to-occupy houses at knockdown prices, there has been a rush of competition.

The picturesque town of Presicce in the sunny region of Puglia is the latest to enter the game with a very tempting offer. Officials say they will pay people up to 30,000 euros to buy an empty house and take up residency. Even better, the houses up fbr sale as part of the deal are priced from around 25,000 euros.

Authorities in Presicce hope the cash motivation will breathe new life into their depopulating town, where newborns are fewer each year.

Presicce dates back to the middle Ages, flourishing during the Renaissance as a prosperous place known for its fine wine, cheeses and cattle trade. It gains a reputation as Puglia’s “town of green gold” for green olive trees and olive oil. Its location is incredible, surrounded by the nature of the Salento area and close to beautiful beaches and clear waters of Santa Maria di Leuca.

“There are many empty homes in the historical center built before 1991 which we would

like to see alive again with new residents,” says local councilor Alfredo Palese. It is a pity witnessing how our old districts full of history, wonderful architecture and art are slowly emptying. The details of the deal are currently being finalized, Palese adds, and authorities are ready to launch applications in upcoming weeks when information will be available on the town hall website.

According to Palese, a 2019 merger (合并)with the nearby town Acquarica to create the larger town Presicce-Acquarica has provided them with extra money to ensure the project can continue for years to come. “After the merger, as per Italian law, our wider territory will be blessed with more public funds, roughly 1,000,000 euros per year for several years forward, which we intend to invest to revitalize (振兴) the old district, ” says Palese.

Together, Presicce and Acquarica now have some 9,000 inhabitants, but only half of the population live in the older part of the community.

The town hall has already launched other plans to attract more residents, including tax benefits to set up new business activities and baby bonuses for families with kids. 12.What problem do many Italian towns face according to the text? A.Population decline. B.Financial crisis.

C.Falling tourism.

D.High living cost.

13.What does the underlined word “tempting” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Risky.

B.Informal.

C.Attractive.

D.Conditional.

14.What is the purpose of paragraph 4? A.To show Presicce’s past glory. B.To recommend a travel destination. C.To point out the economy of Presicce. D.To stress the importance of reviving Presicce. 15.What is the text mainly about? A.An Italian town’s welfare system. B.An Italian town’s recovery strategy. C.An Italian town’s long-term plan. D.An Italian town’s current situation.

My ten-year-old self loved summertime. The best part of summer was the community pool. Everyone was there.

We didn’t have a care in the world. Our biggest concern was which one of us could hold her breath underwater the longest. We didn’t care what we looked like or who was cool. I never once thought about how I looked in a swimsuit or if my hair looked good. I was aware that I wasn’t super-thin like some of the other girls I saw, but I didn’t care.

And then one day, I was taking my turn on the diving board with all the other kids. I jumped in, floated freely to the top and swam over to the ladder to make my way out of the pool. I noticed a girl standing at the top of the ladder, so I swam slowly, giving her time to move. I didn’t know her. She looked cute and thin.

But instead of moving, a strange thing happened. This girl leaned over the pool and said to me, “They don’t allow beached (搁浅的) whales in this pool.”

Beached whales? I soon realized that I was the beached whale. Suddenly, my cool blue swimsuit didn’t cover enough. I got out of the pool quickly and wrapped my towel around my body, feeling like I was going to throw up. From that moment on, I was aware of my size.

Clothes became a horrible dream, and I struggled through my teen years and into adulthood. I cried over clothes that didn’t fit. My heart had always hated the little girl by the pool, who took the confidence out of my life until I got my daughter, Lisa.

One day I dressed my little girl in beautiful clothes and put a bow (蝴蝶结) on her head, but she refused because she liked to be comfortable. Is society interested in comfort? However, when I stared at her, I suddenly realized how beautiful she was, even though she was covered in mud. 注意:
