German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash(废物) to make sculptures. “We are living in the time of garbage,〞 says Schult. “I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.〞 Here, Schult was talking about his 1, 000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
“They are social sculptures,〞 he explains. “They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.〞 So far, Schult’s social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow’s Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.
HA Schult’s work is unforgettable. Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations: “Artists have to learn every time. We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living.〞
Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can’t common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some forms of personal art? Maybe it’s because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn’t, or whom artists are or should be.
You can be an artist like Schult if you try. Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them? Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or
clothing? Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing? Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organizers.

Mention sand art and the image that comes to mind is that of an intricately(杂乱的) carved sculpture or design sketched on a beach surface. Though impressive, they are transient(短暂的) masterpieces that disappear with the first large wave or splash of rain. However, 24-year-old Tim Bengel’s sand art is permanent. That’s because the German artist uses the grit(粗砂) to “paint〞 his masterpieces on canvas. While the final product is certainly beautiful, what is even more so is the way it is created.
Bengel begins by covering a blank canvas with a special adhesive(黏合剂) that dries extremely slowly, giving the artist enough time to draw the desired image. He then begins “painting〞 with grains of black sand and in some cases, gold foil. It takes the young man anywhere from 200 to 300 hours to complete each work of art.
What is most intriguing about Bengel’s process is that only the artist knows what the final image will be. To the rest of the world, the canvas appears to be a mess of black sand. It is only when Bengel sprinkles white sand over the canvas and then dramatically sweeps off all the excess grit that the masterpiece is revealed!
The talented artist, who is currently studying art at the University of Tubingen, says his interest in the subject began after he visited the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Art Museum as a child. Bengel was so inspired that he came home and began trying to reproduce the paintings he had seen at the museum. After winning an art competition at this school at the age of 18, Bengel knew that it was the career he wanted to pursue. But the young man also realised that to be successful, he would have to develop his own unique style. 【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。提到沙画艺术,人们会想到杂乱无章的沙雕。尽管很吸引人,但是这些杰作很短暂。然而,Tim Bengel的沙画作品是在帆布上作画,可以永久保存。 8. One of America’s best-known artist colonies, the MacDowell Colony, will turn 110 next year. It is a place where artists of all types can sweep away distractions(分神之事) and just create.
MacDowell’s operations are funded by foundations, corporations and individuals. Writers, composers, photographers, filmmakers and sculptors—both famous and unknown—compete for the 32 free studios at the place. Once accepted, an artist can stay for as little as a couple of weeks, or as long as a couple of months.
When they arrive, artists find a kind of isolation(隔绝) hard to find in our world. There’s no phone. No fax. No friends. No family. It’s just a cabin in the snowy woods.
Writer Emily Raboteau lives in New York City. She came to MacDowell to work on a novel. She received a desk, chairs, pencils and paper—and ice grippers. The walk from one isolated, one-room studio to another is icy, so colony residents fasten the ice grippers to the bottom of their shoes.
Another colony resident, Belfast composer Elaine Agnew, play a piece called “To a Wild Rose〞, written by Edward MacDowell. She says it’s so famous that every pianist in the world has played the tune. A hundred years ago, MacDowell owned the land where the colony now sits. He liked its isolation and his ability to get work done there. After his death, his wife, Marion, encouraged other artists to come.
And for the last century, artists have accepted the invitation, coming to step outside of their daily lives for a short time. Privacy is respected, but cooperation and discussion is common.
Screenwriter Kit Carson—who wrote TexasChainsawMassacreⅡ and the film adaption of Sam Shepherd’s play Paris, Texas—has visited MacDowell twice. He says that the interdisciplinary(学科间的) discussion there is valuable.
“You sit around at dinner, talking, and then somebody runs off and brings you back some stuff and shows it to you,〞 he says. “That, I didn’t realise, was part of the magic here, because people are really open to showing their opinions here.〞

第二节(总分值25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Located halfway up the Italy’s Apennine Mountain, about 100 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation(隔绝) only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.
Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude(震级) of 5. 7 had struck the mountain. “Get out of here!〞Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars. Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5. 6.
With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six-foot-high wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight. “We’re trapped!〞 he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.
As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche(雪崩)before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.
注意: 续写词数应为150左右。
When Matrone came to himself, he was stuck in the darkness.

Without any hesitation they got down to detecting the remains of the hotel and they were delighted to discover there was a sign of life beneath. With great efforts they removed the thick snow and began cutting the roof. Then they carefully lowered themselves through the hole they’d made.Suddenly, they heard someone crying for help in a weak voice. It was Matrone.Later all the survivors were rescued including Matrone’s wife. The couple felt really lucky to be still alive!
