Welcome to the unit

Teacher: JIAO SHUQING School: Junior high school affiliated to Taizhou high school Teaching material: FWE8A Unit 4 Welcome to the unit Teaching Aim: 1) Introduce the topic and main task of the unit. Help the

students to focus on ‘Wild animals’.

2) Help them to learn more about wild animals and then express their preference.

3) Put it clear that now a lot of animals are in danger. Get the students to start to think of ways to help the animals.

Teaching Procedures Step 1 Lead-in

(1) Tell Ss to guess an interesting puzzle about one of the old friends. Then describe the appearance of him and let Ss guess who he is. e.g. He is short and fat. He has small eyes, small nose, big mouth and

yellow skin. He doesn’t like doing exercise except walking to his bowl many times a day. (2) Discuss the characteristics of Eddie and teach the new word “delicious” at the same time.

Step 2 Presentation

(1) Watch the video about the comic strip and answer two questions about it. (2) Read and try to act out the dialogue. Step 3 Brainstorming

Let Ss say about the wild animals that they’ve known. Encourage them to say as many wild animals as possible. Step 4 Presentation

1) Enjoy videos about cartoon animals and teach the new words. 2) Revise the new words about animals with pictures. 3) Finish Part A on P59. Step 5 Games

1) Tell Ss if they can know much about the wild animals, they will have the chance to join in the Wild Animal Club to help the endangered animals. So try to pass the following three levels. In this part, Ss will be divided into 2 big groups and have a lively competition.

2) Level 1: Tell the names of the animals according to the given pictures or

key words.

3) Level 2: Wild animal puzzle. The teacher makes a wild animal puzzle first and let Ss guess what animal it is. Then try to let Ss make puzzles by themselves.

4) Level 3: Make a survey about Part B on Page 59. Step 6 Making a poster

Tell Ss when you are the members of the wild animal club, you can do something for them, such as making a poster to let more people know the importance of protecting animals. Step 7 Homework

Write down what you know about animals on the cards and give them to your teachers or schoolmates.
