第二部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Fifty-three years ago Barbie Millicent Roberts first appeared in the world of toys. Since then, Barbie doll, as everyone called her, has become the most successful toy doll in history. Her parent, the Mattel Company, said that 90% of all American girls between 3 and 10 have at least one Barbie at home.

However, Barbie is facing some trouble at present. There are many similar dolls on the market in competition with her. Another doll named Bratz, for example, came to life thirteen years ago. She looked more like today's pop stars with heavy makeup(浓妆) and miniskirts. And her company offers more kinds of clothes too.

It seems that Barbie has lost her appeal to older girls. “For younger girls playing with a Barbie is much fun, but when you get older you want something chic” , says Alina Foley, a shop assistant in a New York toy store.

Barbie still has a lot going for her. More and more doll lovers all over the globe have become collectors. They trade Barbies or buy them on eBay. Others look for special and rare Barbie dolls, like Scarlett O‟Hara from “Gone with the Wind”.

On the international market, Barbie remains number one. Although Mattel has been selling fewer Barbies in the United States over the past year, sales in other countries have been going up. In January, Mattel opened its first Barbie store in Shanghai, where girls can shop, eat, drink or even become their own fashion designer.

Mattel is planning big celebration for Barbie's 53rd birthday. Fashion designers from all over the world have been called to make new dresses for Barbie. How long will Barbie stay popular in the world of toy dolls? It is hard to say, but 53 is surely not the age to retire.

21. The author mentions Bratz in Paragraph 2 in order to show that __________. A. even pop stars have their own favorite toy dolls B. Barbie is facing hard competition on the market C. clothing plays the key role in the design of toy dolls

D. the toy market has been expanding greatly over the years

22. The underlined word “chic” in Paragraph 3 probably means “__________”. A. valuable B. scientific C. fashionable D. complex 23. We can learn from the text that Barbie __________.

3

A. plays a role in a film directed by Scarlett O‟Hara B. is most popular with girls under the age of ten

C. has rarely changed its image since its birth 50 years ago D. has long lost its leading position on the market of toy dolls B

You and your friends are settling into your seats. The new Spider-Man movie is about to start and you‟ve got the snacks: soda and popcorn. Food is part of what makes the movies fun.

Just as the lights go out, you catch a slight smell of … tuna fish?! You turn your head, searching for the source. Then you spot him: A couple rows back, some guy is enjoying a tuna fish sandwich. How‟d he get that in here? You wonder. Then you remember how much you paid for your snacks.

What invites the unwelcome outside food is probably the price. Why pay $ 5 for a bag of M&Ms when you can get them for a dollar at the corner store?

Earlier this year, a Michigan man decided to fight for his right to snack. Joshua Thompson is using his local theater after it banned outside food. He argues the ban breaks a Michigan law that prevents businesses from charging extremely high prices. However, most legal experts believe Thompson has little chance of winning his case, though he does have a point: 85 cents out of a dollar of treats a movie theater sells is pure profit(纯利).

The truth is that movie theaters are more in the snack business than the movie business. A huge part of the ticket income goes to the Hollywood studio. This makes sense, since the studios have to pay the costs of movie production and advertising. But that often doesn‟t leave much cash for the theater, which also has its own running costs. If customers stopped buying food, owners would have to raise ticket prices even higher.

Of course, there‟s another reason to think twice before bringing food into the movies: It‟s against the rules. Breaking those rules can have unpleasant consequences too. Some theaters will kick you out if they catch you. Even without the threat of punishment, we should follow rules all the time---out of respect. Here‟s a good idea: Eat before the movie. 24. What is the topic of the text?

A. The pleasure of enjoying snacks. B. A Michigan man‟s fight for his right.

4

C. Movie theaters‟ ban on outside food. D. Bad manners in movie theaters. 25. What do we know about Joshua Thompson? A. He broke a Michigan law. B. He is likely to lose the case.

C. He thinks cinema tickets are too expensive. D. He was forbidden to have snacks at the theaters.

26. In Paragraph 5, the author mainly explains _________. A. how movie studios work with movie theaters B. how movie theaters reduce their operating costs

C. why Hollywood studios must pay high costs D. why snack sales are important to movie theaters

27. How does the author feel about bringing outside food into the cinema? A. It is unacceptable. B. It is convenient. C. It is great fun. D. It is lawful.

How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts? Around the holidays, many families don‟t consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.

●Either have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your mail until you return. Nothing says “Hey, we are not home!” like when your postbox is filled with all kinds of mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.

● Set several different lights in your house on random timers(随机定时器). Don't leave your outdoor lights on all the time. If an outdoor light remains on for days, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.

● If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thefts see a neighbor or a friend entering your house every day, they will know you are not home.

● Close all your curtains when you leave home. This is effective to deter possible thefts, as no one can see what is in your house. If they don't know what is inside,
