Introduction

This story is based on historical fact. Blackbeard was a real-life man , called Edward Drummond who was as cruel to his own crew as to his enemies. Because of his malevolence and emotionlessness, his victims who lived in Virginia begged the British Navy to help. This is the story of Blackbeard's Last Stand.

Summary Lieutenant Robert Maynard received a letter that ordered him to hunt Blackbeard who struck fear into the hearts of every body who knows him down. The captain didn't willing to follow the order but accepted it as a leader of the British navy.

Although captain's crew thought their captain was a mad man when captain reading the letter, they accepted the task unwillingly.

There were several captain's advantages over the Blackbeard, for example, captain had more crew than Blackbeard. Nevertheless, The bay in which Blackbeard's ship sat was too shallow for a large navy ship, so the captain had to use sloops which was small and fast, but theirs didn't have any cannons, and Blackbeard's ship was armed with 40 big guns.

Captain and his crew set out and arrived at a place that was near to Blackbeard's ship. The next day before their battle broke out, captain spotted Blackbeard whose beard cast a dark shadow across his face, Lieutenant Robert Maynard thought him as a giant.

Blackbeard ordered his men to load their cannons. A few scconds later, the big gunsboomed and Baker's ship was hit. After many meaningless resistances, most of men on captain's ship were wounded, so captain ordered his crew to get below decks to dodge cannonballs and to pretend that they were dead in order to make Blackbeard into their trap.

Sure enough, Blackbeard ordered his men and decided to climb aboard onto captain's ship to cut captain and his crew to pieces.

But when they went aboard the captain's ship, they found that they'd been tricked.

However, Blackbeard was ready for battle after pausing for a second. Just then, they fought with each other armed with swords and pistols. At last, captain's defeated Blackbeard and his men with their unitedness and courage.

Analysis

After reading this story, I summarized some personalities of captain.

1. He was a responsible man.

\"You' re in the navy! You' re not paid to like it.\"(P14) \"And let them get away?\"(P34)

2 He was a confident man.

\"You see, he was just a pirate, \"I told Munro as we sailed for home. \"All this talk of it being impossible to kill him was nonsense.\"(P45)

3 He was a brave man.

My shot hit him in the shoulder and I saw him stagger back. (P41) I raised my sword to take the blow-but it snapped in half like a twig.(P42)

4 He was a reckless man.

In my opinion, if I were the captain, I would brought some guns like pirates'. Even some pirates could have guns, why don't a captain who worked in royal navy had? If he used advanced weapons, his friends (such as Baker) would not died. The captain was really a silly man though he succeed in beating the Blackbeard.
