Tess of the d’Urbervilles is a masterpiece of writing of Thomas Hardy. Tess is the heroine of this novel. She is a poor, hard-working, beautiful, brave, honest and responsible country girl. Living in the dark, unjust old society, her life is a tragedy which made by two men, Alec Stokes d’Urbervilles and Angel Clare.
First, Tess is a very brave girl at her time. After being seduced by Alec, she is brave enough to face others’ mocking. She is brave enough to rebel against the social conventions and moral standards of the day. Even if humiliated and abandoned, Tess never gives up her hope for life. Moreover, for living together with her true loved one Angel, she finally makes up her mind and kills the sinister Alec. Tess is a victim of social injustice and prejudice.
Second, Tess is a very honest girl. Facing Angel’s love, she can not keep her sad secret from him. Although she knows the consequence will be bad, she still speaks out her misfortune frankly to Angel, especially at their wedding night. However, compared to Tess, Angel is a very selfish and hypocritical man. He can not forgive and give sympathy for Tess.
Third, Tess is a very responsible girl. She is responsible for her family. As the oldest daughter of a poor family, she tries her best to support it.. She is very diligent and kind. As a matter of fact, she is forced by her parents to come to Alec who is supposed to be Tess’s relative. However, she never claims her parents but loves them as before. What’s more, she gets married with Alec for her family’s sake.
The last but not least, Tess is a pure woman. May be she is lost her physical purity, but she is still a very pure woman at spiritual aspects. Although her body is violated by Alec, she still remains her loyalty to Angel. Angel is her true love forever. To some extent, she is mentally injured by Angel, but she still be faithful to him as the same.
In this novel, the author shows out how women are wronged by the moral standards of his day. Tess is a representative of the insecure and inferior woman at that time. Tess’s whole life is full of sufferings. She can not master her own life. But she dare to rebel and act against the social conventions. She is a great woman who dare to fight against the unjust treatment to women. She is an innocent, brave, loyal and intelligent woman in this masterpiece.
