Part A

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. After you have heard each sentence or paragraph, interpret it into Chinese. Start interpreting at the signal…and stop it at the signal…You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now let us begin Part A with the first passage.

Passage 1 is about the gap between rich and poor people. Passage 1: As we all know, there are more rich people than ever before, including some 7 million millionaires, and over 400 billionaires. They are getting plenty of pleasure, though they have worries, too. // As for the poor, the gap between them and the rich is widening, even in the industrialized countries where for much of the 20th century the gap had narrowed. In 2004, income inequality in Britain reached its widest level in 45 years.// Helping the poor, the truly poor，is a much worthier goal than merely narrowing inequality. If the rich get poorer due to high taxation, some people may feel pleased but few are better off. //

If the poor people get richer, however, the whole country will benefit. Focusing resources and policy on poverty would be worthwhile simply on humanitarian grounds. Passage 2 is about the changes of the American family, its traditions and its values. Passage 2:

It is our common belief that we American people want to build an ideal society on the basis of harmonious families. But the real picture is that the American families are suffering a crisis of collapsing. //A high divorce rate, an increase in single-parent households, a rise in the number of unmarried parents, all this suggests that American families are no longer what they used to. The traditional high value of family life is gone, gone with the wind!// Not long ago, we Americans had pretty good idea of what family meant. Traditional relationships among parents, children and siblings were identified as the most important aspect of life.\\\\ Now it is time for us Americans to restore our belief in family and re-embrace our traditional value on family life. Let’s give our first priority to family, our second priority to family and our third priority to family as well. （参）

Passage 1 改革开放的20多年来，中国的经济发展迅速，社会生产力大大提高，人民生活不断改善，贫困人口大幅减少。// 在中国实行市场经济和现代化建设过程中，得到了世界各国的支持和帮助，中国人民表示衷心的感谢。// 在发展市场经济，提高企业管理水平，建立高新技术产业等方面，中国人民还要虚心向世界各国人民学习，还要更加努力。// 中国力争在本世纪中叶把全国人民的生活提高到小康水平。所以，今后的中心任务就是发展经济，提高人民生活水平。//

（参） In the past two decades and more of reforming and opening to the outside world, China has witnessed a fast booming in economy, a great increase in social productivity, a constant improvement in people’s life and a big reduction in poverty population.\\\\ The Chinese people feel grateful to all the other countries in the world for their help and support to China in its implementation of market economy and construction of modernization.\\\\ The Chinese people will further modestly learn from the other nations of the world in developing market economy, improving enterprise management and building up high-tech industries.\\\\ The Chinese government will try its best to raise the people’s living standard to a well-off level by the mid of the century. Therefore, the future essential task is to promote economy and raise the people’s living standard.

Passage 2: 今天到会的许多人士来自于民营或中小企业。我们高兴地看到，民营和中小企业“走出去”的步伐也在不断加快。// 如何更好地支持民营和中小企业到海外发展，参与国际竞争，是外交为改革开放和现代化建设服务的一项重要内容。// 我们在配合和推动国有大型企业“走出去”方面，已经有了一些成功的经验，在开拓海外国际市场方面取得了可喜的成绩。// 今天的机会非常好，希望大家充分利用，并建立起良好的互动平台，相互学习，相互交流，相互促进。
